Two Israeli soldiers killed in southern Lebanon clashes

Two Israeli reserve soldiers were killed and four others wounded in southern Lebanon on Wednesday following the detonation of an explosive device. The Israeli military identified the deceased as 34-year-old Major Harel Birenstok and 33-year-old Sergeant Major Tamir Vaknin, both serving in the 2855th Battalion of the 55th Brigade. The incident occurred during Israeli military operations in the region.

In response to the incident and what Israel described as a violation of the existing ceasefire, the Israeli military initiated a series of strikes in southern Lebanon. The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported that an Israeli airstrike on the town of Tibnin resulted in at least one death and left 12 others wounded. These events occur simultaneously with U.S.-brokered talks taking place in Rome aimed at stabilizing the border region following an agreement reached in June.

Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, Israel maintains its intention to enforce a security zone in southern Lebanon to neutralize threats from the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah. The flare-up highlights the fragility of the recent security arrangements meant to de-escalate hostilities between the two nations.
