Increase in search and rescue incidents during summer season in Cyprus

The Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) in Cyprus has reported a significant rise in the number of emergency incidents requiring intervention throughout the summer season. Lieutenant Commander Giorgos Oikonomou, the commander of the JRCC, attributed this upward trend to the peak in tourist activity and the increased use of maritime vessels and water-based recreational equipment.

According to Commander Oikonomou, the majority of recent search and rescue operations involve swimmers, amateur fishermen, and speedboats. A particular concern highlighted by authorities is the dangerous behavior of swimmers performing jumps from cliffs and rocky areas. Officials urge the public to exercise heightened caution, strictly follow safety guidelines, and monitor weather forecasts before engaging in maritime activities. These precautions are especially critical in remote coastal regions that currently lack professional lifeguard coverage.

This rise in incidents follows seasonal patterns associated with the height of the summer tourism period in Cyprus. The JRCC continues to monitor coastal zones closely and advises that individuals prioritize safety measures to prevent accidents and avoid the need for emergency intervention.
