Eyewitness account of 1974 coup events in Cyprus

Andreas Polydorou has shared his personal testimony regarding the 1974 coup d'état in Cyprus, detailing the trauma experienced by his family during the onset of the coup and the subsequent Turkish invasion. Polydorou recounts being subjected to arrests, beatings, and poor detention conditions during this period of political volatility.

He specifically recalls that on the day of the coup, at approximately 12:30 p.m., while his family was harvesting potatoes in Kato Pervolia, they were approached by the late DIKO Paphos MP Nikos Pittokopitis and the president of the Union of Fighters, Mikis Tempriotis. These individuals demanded the requisition of the family's Land Rover vehicle. Although his father initially refused, he eventually relented after being pressured by others. Polydorou uses this historical account to urge younger generations to reject extremism and fanaticism in order to prevent a recurrence of such events.
