Tensions rise within Cyprus’s DISY party as the 2028 presidential race approaches

The Democratic Rally (DISY) party in Cyprus is experiencing significant internal friction as the political landscape shifts ahead of the 2028 presidential elections. Tensions have intensified between the Presidential Palace and the party’s headquarters on Pindarou Street. President Nikos Christodoulides and former DISY leader Averof Neofytou are currently engaged in a public dispute concerning the Cyprus problem and government policies, while party leadership members continue to criticize recent cabinet reshuffling efforts.

Simultaneously, the party is initiating its formal selection process for a presidential candidate. Deputy Spokesperson Elena Kousiou announced that for the first time, the party nominee will be chosen by the rank-and-file members through a national congress, rather than solely by the Political Bureau. To participate, members must have been registered for at least 90 days. While Neofytou has signaled his intent to seek the nomination, other potential contenders reportedly include party leader Annita Demetriou and Giorgos Pamboridis. The party has already commissioned internal polls to gauge voter sentiment, reflecting a proactive, albeit volatile, approach to long-term election planning.

This early campaign activity marks a departure from traditional party dynamics, as Neofytou attempts a political comeback following his defeat in the 2023 elections.
