FIFA leadership under pressure following failed privatization proposal

FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing a severe leadership crisis following his controversial proposal to sell a 20% stake in World Cup commercial rights to private investors. The plan sparked widespread opposition from member federations, with several European organizations, including Greece, withdrawing their support. Reports from The Times allege that Infantino attempted to secure backing by promising Morocco the hosting rights for the 2030 World Cup final. The 2030 tournament is a joint venture between Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, with additional opening matches in Uruguay, Paraguay, and Argentina.

Following an emergency meeting in Rabat attended by Infantino and General Secretary Mattias Grafstrom, FIFA issued a formal apology to its 211 member federations. While the federation confirmed continued support for Infantino, analysts note his position remains precarious, marking his most significant challenge since his 2016 election. FIFA leadership stated they would review the handling of the proposal and emphasized that no further errors concerning the organization's integrity would be tolerated.
