FIFA president Gianni Infantino faces crisis over privatization proposal

FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing a major leadership crisis following a controversial proposal to sell a 20% stake in the organization's commercial rights to private investors. The plan, which triggered widespread backlash from member associations, prompted an emergency meeting in Rabat, Morocco, attended by Infantino and General Secretary Mattias Grafstrom. Following the meeting, FIFA issued a formal apology to its 211 member associations, admitting that the process was handled poorly and that the leadership should have acted differently.

While FIFA's Executive Committee and Board have publicly expressed their support for Infantino, describing his work as essential, his position remains precarious. The situation has intensified the rift with UEFA, whose president Aleksander Ceferin and European member associations have withdrawn their support. UEFA has threatened to boycott major events, including the World Cup and the Club World Cup, unless they receive guarantees that such privatization plans will not be pursued in the future. Reports suggest that in an attempt to secure support, Infantino had previously offered Morocco hosting rights for the 2030 World Cup final, a tournament to be co-hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal.

FIFA officials have pledged to review their internal processes to restore integrity, but the ongoing standoff with major European federations continues to cast doubt on Infantino's political future, marking his most significant challenge since taking office in 2016.
