Escalation in drone attacks and strikes on energy and maritime infrastructure

Between August 6 and 8, 2026, Russia and Ukraine engaged in a significant escalation of cross-border drone strikes and maritime warfare. Russia reported the interception of over 1,000 Ukrainian drones across multiple regions, including a major night attack where 605 were downed on August 6 and 397 on August 8. Ukrainian strikes targeted key energy facilities, including the Slavneft-Yanos refinery in Yaroslavl, a facility in Bashkortostan, and the Ilsky refinery in Krasnodar, causing fires and injuries.

Simultaneously, Russian forces increased pressure on Ukraine’s maritime and energy infrastructure. Moscow claimed to have struck several vessels in the Black Sea used for military transport, while also hitting fuel storage facilities at the Pivdennyi port. In Ukraine, Russian strikes in Balakliya, Sumy, and the Kyiv region resulted in multiple civilian casualties, including the death of a child in Brovary. Another attack in the Dnipropetrovsk region killed two people. The conflict continues to intensify, with both sides targeting critical logistics and industrial supply chains deep within their respective territories, leading to frequent fires and disruptions in energy distribution.
