Ilias Myrianthous appointed as new Environment and Animal Welfare Commissioner in Cyprus

President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, appointed Ilias Myrianthous as the new Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare during a government reshuffle announced on August 4, 2026. Myrianthous, a former Member of Parliament for the Paphos district and an accountant by profession, brings experience from his previous service in various parliamentary committees, including Agriculture and Natural Resources. He officially assumed his duties on August 6, taking over from the outgoing commissioner, Antonia Theodosiou.

Upon taking office, Myrianthous announced that his immediate priority is to conduct a series of consultations with ministries, local government authorities, and non-governmental organizations. These meetings aim to foster cooperation and resolve urgent environmental and animal welfare issues. As part of his initial outreach, he visited the Akamas Municipality on August 7, 2026, to discuss local concerns with Mayor Marinos Lambrou. A subsequent meeting with the Mayor of Polis Chrysochous was scheduled for August 10. The commissioner emphasized that his office intends to address systemic problems and promote sustainable development, noting that the Akamas region remains a high priority for the current administration.
