Ilias Myrianthous assumes office as the new Commissioner for the Environment

President Nikos Christodoulides has appointed Ilias Myrianthous as the new Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare following a government reshuffle. The official handover ceremony took place on August 6, 2026, where outgoing Commissioner Antonia Theodosiou formally passed the responsibilities of the office to her successor.

Born in Paphos in 1967, Myrianthous holds a background in finance and accounting. His legislative career began in 1998 as an EDEK MP for Paphos, serving until 2001 and returning to parliament in 2016. During his tenure, he served on several committees, including Agriculture and Natural Resources, which provides a foundation for his new role. Theodosiou expressed gratitude for her two-and-a-half-year term, highlighting collaborative progress made during her leadership.

Myrianthous has identified the initiation of contacts with relevant ministries, local authorities, and civic groups as his immediate priority. He intends to focus on fostering enhanced cooperation to address pressing environmental and animal welfare issues effectively, building on the initiatives established by his predecessor.
