New Larnaca-Dhekelia road project opens to traffic

The third phase of the Larnaca-Dhekelia road project has officially opened to traffic, marking the completion of an initiative that had been in the planning stages for 26 years. The €14.8 million infrastructure project aims to enhance road safety, accessibility, and the tourism potential of the region.

The project consists of a 3.25-kilometre main road featuring four lanes, a central median, cycling paths, pedestrian infrastructure, and four roundabouts. Additionally, 22 Pelican-type pedestrian crossings were installed to improve safety. A secondary network of 4.5 kilometres of service roads is also included. While the main thoroughfare opened on July 24, construction officially concluded on July 16, 2026.

Construction began on September 30, 2022, with an original completion date set for March 2025. District public works engineer Lazaros Lazarou attributed the delays to contract extensions and changes to the original scope, asserting there were no contractual disputes. Remaining work on parts of the service roads is expected to be finalized by the end of October 2026.
