Latsia-Geri municipality rejects government plan for youth protection homes

The Municipality of Latsia-Geri has formally reiterated its categorical opposition to the establishment of child and adolescent protection homes within its municipal boundaries. In an official statement released on August 6, 2026, the municipal council confirmed it received a letter from the government on July 30, 2026, requesting the lifting of previous objections regarding these infrastructure projects. The municipality has explicitly rejected this request, demanding written assurances from the state that such plans will be permanently withdrawn.

This dispute has historical roots dating back to 2023, when the former municipal councils of Latsia and Geri initially opposed the allocation of state land to the Social Welfare Services for these structures. The project has faced significant public backlash, including local protests and a petition signed by over 8,000 residents, which was formally submitted to the Presidential Palace during a protest event in November of that year. The municipality maintains that the current central government plan contradicts the expressed will of both the local leadership and its constituents. As of now, the council awaits a formal response from the Ministry of Interior regarding their demand for the total cancellation of the proposed project.
