Cyprus issues new heatwave warnings as temperatures reach 40 degrees

The Department of Meteorology in Cyprus has issued a series of yellow weather alerts as temperatures across inland areas reach 40 degrees Celsius. The warnings, effective on Friday, August 7, and Saturday, August 8, advise the public to take precautions against extreme heat and avoid unnecessary exposure during peak hours. High humidity levels have exacerbated the conditions, with coastal areas recording humidity exceeding 70 percent and as high as 98 percent in the Akamas region.

Seasonal low pressure is currently affecting the region, leading to hot weather with generally clear skies. While conditions remain hot, localized clouds are expected to develop in the afternoon, potentially causing isolated showers over the mountainous regions. Meteorologists note that temperatures are slightly above seasonal averages, and the humidity is attributed to moist air masses moving inland from the sea.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation, urging residents to stay hydrated and protect vulnerable groups including the elderly and children.
