Cyprus issues new yellow weather alert for extreme heat

The Department of Meteorology in Cyprus has issued a new yellow weather alert due to a persistent heatwave affecting the region. On Friday, August 7, 2026, inland areas are expected to face temperatures reaching approximately 40 degrees Celsius. The warning will be in effect from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. local time.

Following the dissipation of morning mist and low clouds, the weather is forecast to be primarily sunny with some increased cloudiness in mountainous areas during the afternoon. Winds will shift from light force 3 to moderate force 4, potentially reaching force 5 in coastal regions. Temperatures on the coast are expected to reach up to 34 degrees Celsius, with 31 degrees predicted for the west. Meanwhile, local humidity levels recently peaked at 71 percent at Paphos Airport, contrasting with significantly lower levels in mountainous areas like Prodromos.

Authorities have advised residents to take precautions against the extreme heat. The current meteorological conditions are expected to persist through the weekend without significant changes in temperature, while isolated showers remain a possibility in the mountains.
