France and Germany report escalation in Russian interference ahead of elections

Eight months before the French presidential elections, the government has warned of an increase in Russian interference aimed at destabilizing the electoral process. Former Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, who has personally been targeted by false rumors regarding his health, explicitly accused Moscow of attempting to undermine the vote. Similar campaigns have targeted other potential candidates, including center-right politician Edouard Philippe, who faced defamation regarding his health, and left-wing MEP Raphaël Glucksmann, whose partner, journalist Lea Salamé, was falsely accused of media manipulation to benefit his campaign.

In tandem with the situation in France, the German government has also denounced a surge in Russian disinformation campaigns ahead of critical state elections. Both nations are currently evaluating new legislative measures to protect their democratic processes from foreign influence, with the French left calling for stricter regulation of social media platforms like TikTok and X. These events have further strained diplomatic relations between European capitals and the Kremlin, as authorities move to investigate the organized nature of these destabilizing networks.
