Cyprus government approves new boards for semi-governmental organizations

On August 6, 2026, the Cypriot Council of Ministers finalized the new composition of boards for various semi-governmental organizations and public entities. The restructuring process involved fourteen organizations: seven saw the appointment of new chairpersons, while seven others retained their incumbent leadership to ensure continuity. Among the notable changes, Pavlos Pavlou was appointed as the new president of the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC), and Loizos Loizou was named president of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC).

Following the announcement, the government faced criticism regarding the transparency of the selection process. Allegations emerged that several individuals were appointed despite not having formally expressed interest in the positions. Furthermore, a conflict of interest issue involving a Cyta board member prompted an immediate replacement decision. In response to these concerns, the Committee on Institutions of the House of Representatives has registered the matter for a formal parliamentary investigation. The probe aims to evaluate the operations of the Advisory Council and ensure accountability in the governance of these entities, with upcoming discussions scheduled to address the procedural grievances raised by opposition parties and transparency advocates.
