Cholera outbreak reported in Chad

Chad’s Ministry of Health reported an official cholera outbreak that has resulted in 13 deaths and 239 confirmed cases as of early August 2026. The epidemic is concentrated in the northern province of Hadjer-Lamis and the capital city of N'Djamena, where 11 of the 13 recorded deaths occurred during the month of August. The first death was documented on June 13, leading to the official declaration of the epidemic on July 24.

In response to the crisis, authorities have launched a vaccination campaign that has reached 50,799 people to date. While cholera is easily treatable with hydration salts and antibiotics, it remains a severe threat that can be fatal within hours without medical intervention. This outbreak follows similar regional patterns observed in the Central African Republic, Nigeria, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Efforts to manage the disease and prevent further spread continue as the government monitors the health situation in affected areas.
