Official damage assessment begins in fire-stricken Porto Germeno

On August 5, 2026, Evangelos Tournas, Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, visited Porto Germeno to oversee the initial damage assessment following a major wildfire. Accompanied by Mandra-Eidyllia Mayor Armodios Drikos, the Minister initiated a process involving seven specialized teams from the General Directorate for the Rehabilitation of Natural Disaster Victims (GDAEFK). These teams are tasked with documenting destruction to residential properties and other assets to facilitate immediate restoration and financial compensation for the affected citizens.

While the authorities have begun the formal recording process, the situation on the ground remains dire. Residents have returned to their properties to search through debris, facing significant emotional distress and the total loss of their homes. Although the fire has been brought under control, the local community faces a long and difficult path toward reconstruction. The ongoing assessments are critical for the government to determine the scale of the necessary support and to set the official timeline for long-term recovery efforts in the disaster-stricken area.
