Grape blessing tradition revived in Cyprus

On August 6, 2026, the traditional “blessing of the grapes” ceremony was observed in the village of Lyso, located in the Paphos district of Cyprus, as well as in other viticultural communities across the island. The event coincides with the feast of the Transfiguration of the Savior.

During the ceremony, local farmers bring the season's first ripe grapes to the church to be blessed. According to folklore researcher Anna Tselepou, this ancient practice signifies gratitude for the earth's yield and serves as a formal precursor to the harvest, which is expected to begin in the coming days. The tradition, which dates back to antiquity and was later integrated into Christian practice, remains a vital cultural element for local vineyard regions. By performing these rites, residents aim to preserve their heritage and ensure the continuation of agricultural customs for future generations.
