Houthi forces launch major strikes on Yemeni government troops

Yemeni Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for a large-scale offensive using missiles and drones against internationally recognized government forces. The attacks, which targeted positions in the Marib province as well as the Al Ruwaik, Al Abr, and Al Thaniya regions, resulted in significant casualties. While initial reports cited at least 38 fatalities, updated military sources have raised the death toll to at least 58 soldiers, with dozens more reported wounded. These strikes represent the deadliest escalation since the implementation of a ceasefire agreement in 2022.

The Houthi military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, stated that the offensive was a response to what he described as a significant build-up of government military power backed by Saudi Arabia. In addition to the casualties among government troops, reports indicate that separate Houthi attacks on targets within Saudi Arabia left 11 civilians injured. These developments have fueled concerns of a renewed conflict in the region, which has been fragile since the original decade-long civil war was paused over four years ago.

The situation remains volatile as both sides accuse each other of provocation.
