Internal crisis emerges within the Democratic National Movement

On August 7, 2026, four co-founders and members of the six-person Political Bureau of the Democratic National Movement (DEK) announced the withdrawal of their support for the party’s president, Andreas Themistokleous. The signatories include Vice Presidents Nikos Charalambous and Prokopis Prokopiou, General Secretary Marios Thrasyvoulou, and General Organizing Secretary Andreas Sotiriou.

The officials issued a joint statement accusing Themistokleous of engaging in unconstitutional, arbitrary, and opaque actions that have permanently damaged trust and cooperation within the party leadership. While the four members reaffirmed their commitment to the movement’s founding values and objectives, they explicitly stated that the party president no longer enjoys their support.

Furthermore, the members clarified the current operational status of the DEK. They noted that the party has been without a press representative since May 25, 2026, and confirmed that the movement does not employ any paid staff. The party currently relies on its collective bodies to make and communicate decisions when they are in session.
