Egypt, ExxonMobil and QatarEnergy move to connect Cypriot gas fields to Egyptian infrastructure

On August 7, 2026, Egyptian, ExxonMobil, and QatarEnergy officials initiated executive procedures to connect Cypriot natural gas fields to Egyptian infrastructure. Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, held meetings with ExxonMobil’s Vice President for LNG Market Development, Kenan Nariman, and ExxonMobil Egypt President, Diaa Suhail, to formalize the implementation of a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This initiative focuses on utilizing Egypt's existing liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities to export Cypriot gas to international markets.

Following the meeting, the parties agreed to immediately establish and activate joint technical, commercial, and regulatory committees. These working groups are tasked with developing clear schedules and conducting necessary studies to ensure the commercial viability of the project. Minister Badawi emphasized that achieving a Final Investment Decision (FID) remains a critical milestone for the development of these energy assets. The partnership is expected to provide economic added value for Cyprus, Egypt, and the participating energy companies by integrating their resources through the Egyptian network.
