Cyprus drug-related convictions and prison overcrowding in 2025

In 2025, Cypriot courts convicted over 900 individuals for drug trafficking and possession offences, a development that has exacerbated overcrowding within the Central Prisons. According to data released by the Anti-Drugs Unit (YKAN), 877 new cases were filed throughout the year, with a total of 941 cases heard, including those carried over from previous periods.

Of the individuals convicted, 232 received prison sentences—some cumulative totaling over 700 years—while 137 were given suspended prison sentences and 558 were ordered to pay fines. Additionally, legal outcomes included 21 financial guarantees, 17 custody orders, three supervision orders, and one suspended movement restriction. Two individuals were acquitted. Currently, Cyprus detains 230 people for drug-related crimes, with another 79 in remand. Despite persistent and severe sentencing by Criminal Courts and frequent police operations, officials report that traffickers continue to import significant quantities of narcotics for profit.

The persistent influx of drug offenders continues to strain the capacity of the national prison system. Authorities remain focused on ongoing enforcement and investigations to combat the persistent illegal drug trade.
