Monk remanded in custody following violent assault at Agios Neophytos Monastery

On the morning of August 7, 2026, a 51-year-old Romanian monk residing at the Agios Neophytos Monastery in Paphos was arrested following a violent altercation. The incident occurred when the abbot, accompanied by a 53-year-old monastery employee and a 27-year-old novice, visited the monk's living quarters to request the return of keys to a room he had occupied for approximately four years following the death of his father.

According to police reports and an official statement from the monastery, the monk refused the request, leading to a physical confrontation in which a box cutter was used as a weapon. The 53-year-old employee sustained injuries to his neck and hand, requiring hospitalization, while the 27-year-old novice also suffered hand injuries. The suspect was brought before the Paphos District Court, which ordered him to be remanded in custody for six days to facilitate the investigation into charges including attempted murder, grievous bodily harm, and illegal possession of an offensive weapon.
