Monk arrested for attempted murder at Saint Neophytos Monastery in Paphos

On the morning of August 7, 2026, a 51-year-old monk was arrested following a violent altercation at the Saint Neophytos Monastery in the Paphos district. The incident occurred when the monastery's abbot, Leontios, accompanied by a church committee, a 53-year-old maintenance worker, and a 27-year-old novice monk, visited the suspect's cell to reclaim keys following a decision to remove him from the premises for disciplinary reasons. The monk, who reportedly held onto the keys for years following his father's death, refused to comply, leading to a physical struggle.

During the confrontation, the suspect allegedly grabbed a paper cutter and attacked the visitors. The 53-year-old worker suffered injuries to his neck and hand, requiring surgery and hospitalization, though he is currently in stable condition. The 27-year-old monk also sustained a hand injury during his attempt to intervene and was treated and discharged. On August 8, the Paphos District Court ordered the suspect to be held in custody for six days to facilitate the police investigation into charges including attempted murder, grievous bodily harm, and illegal possession of an offensive weapon. The suspect reportedly contested his detention conditions while remaining in police custody.
