Cyprus government budget allocations for research and development in 2025

According to Eurostat data released on August 7, 2026, government budget allocations for research and development (R&D) in Cyprus decreased significantly in 2025. The total R&D funding reached 111.996 million euros, down from 150.610 million euros in 2024. This equates to 113.9 euros per inhabitant, a decline from the 155.9 euros per capita recorded in 2024.

In contrast, the European Union as a whole saw an increase in R&D investment. Total EU government budget allocations for R&D in 2025 reached approximately 130.2 billion euros, representing 0.69% of the EU's GDP and a 2.4% increase compared to 2024. Across the EU, per capita spending reached 288.9 euros, with Luxembourg recording the highest investment at 917.2 euros per inhabitant. Historical data highlights that while Cyprus spent 69.3 euros per capita in 2015, the broader EU average has grown by 57.7% over the same ten-year period, reaching 288.9 euros from 183.2 euros in 2015.
