Major criminal network dismantled in Mediterranean anti-trafficking operation
On August 7, 2026, international authorities announced the dismantling of a major criminal syndicate operating across the Western Mediterranean. The operation, led by Spanish police with support from Europol, French, Portuguese, and Polish agencies, resulted in 78 arrests, including four high-level leaders. Twenty-seven of those detained are currently held under temporary custody.
The network functioned as a professional logistics provider for various criminal groups, specializing in the smuggling of cannabis, synthetic drugs like MDMA, firearms, and migrants. Investigations revealed that the syndicate completed 64 maritime trips, transporting approximately 2,000 migrants to the Iberian Peninsula or the Balearic Islands. Each passage cost up to 12,000 euros, generating total profits exceeding 24 million euros. The crossings were described as highly dangerous, often involving high-speed boats navigating rough seas with migrants frequently tied down or lacking life jackets.
The operation was conducted by a specialized Europol task force established to combat migrant smuggling. The network was also linked to other criminal activities, including violent robberies, extortion, illegal detention, and money laundering. Authorities remain focused on the broader investigation into the syndicate's extensive illegal operations.
