New fossil evidence reveals cannibalism among Homo antecessor in Spain
Recent archaeological excavations at the Gran Dolina cave in the Atapuerca Mountains, Spain, have uncovered significant new evidence regarding the biology and behavior of Homo antecessor. These findings, dating back approximately 850,000 years, surface more than 30 years after the species was first identified in the region. Researchers unearthed over 20 skeletal remains, including cranial fragments, vertebrae, teeth, and major limb bones such as the femur, tibia, and humerus.
Key to this discovery is the presence of cut marks on the bones, which experts suggest indicate post-mortem processing associated with cannibalism. While previous research often suggested such practices might have been limited to younger individuals, these new findings confirm that cannibalism was also practiced among adults. The study provides critical insights into the social organization and survival strategies of some of the earliest human populations to inhabit Europe. Ongoing analysis of these remains continues to enhance the scientific understanding of the species' daily life and behavioral complexities.
