Future of Cyprus-Greece ferry connection remains uncertain without subsidies

The maritime passenger connection between Cyprus and Greece, operated by Scandro Holding Ltd, faces potential termination after 2027. Charalambos Manoli, CEO of the company, confirmed that the route has failed to achieve the initial goal of autonomous financial viability, rendering it dependent on state subsidies to continue operations.

The service, which was launched in 2022 following European Commission approval, initially secured a three-year subsidy that has since been extended for an additional three years. Manoli attributed the lack of profitability to insufficient passenger demand compared to domestic Greek island routes. Passenger statistics highlight a seasonal imbalance: crossings typically average around 100 passengers in June, rise to 200–250 in July, and reach full capacity only in August. While the ferry "AF Marina" recently reached a season-high of 380 passengers departing from Limassol, the operator maintains that a three-month operational window is insufficient to sustain the line without external support.

Future viability remains subject to government decisions regarding the renewal of financial aid. The operator suggests that without a state-backed extension beyond 2027, the service will likely cease to exist.
