Nicosia mayor proposes restoration of historic Corner building after fire

On August 7, 2026, the Mayor of Nicosia, Charalambos Prountzos, expressed his readiness to initiate the restoration and reuse of the historic Corner building, which was recently damaged by a fire. The mayor highlighted the cultural significance of the site, noting that its destruction wounds the collective memory of Nicosia residents and damages the city's architectural heritage.

The site is situated in a prominent location near the Presidential Palace and opposite the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Before the fire, the building had already fallen into a derelict state, which officials described as an eyesore for the capital. Prountzos, who is currently campaigning for the Nicosia municipality, emphasized that revitalizing such landmarks is essential for preserving local history and improving the urban landscape for future generations.

While the building has long been associated with the former Corner brewery, the mayor's current focus is on a comprehensive recovery project to restore the structure.
