Freedom24 partnership transforms Cyprus into European chess hub
Since 2023, the financial company Freedom24 has served as the general partner of the Cyprus Chess Federation, leading to a significant shift in the country's status within the international chess community. In just three years, Cyprus has evolved into a major European chess destination, hosting 26 professional competitions with the support of the firm.
Key events supported by this partnership include the Women's World Grand Prix stages in Nicosia held in 2023 and 2025, as well as a Candidates Tournament at the Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort, which featured a €1 million prize pool. Additionally, the Freedom24 Chess Academy was established in Limassol on March 1, 2025, under the leadership of International Master Artem Sadovsky. The academy aims to cultivate local talent, with early success seen in student Olga Mikhailina, who increased her rating from 1736 to 2250 in under a year.
These developments represent a historic milestone for the island, as the country had not previously played a leading role in global chess. The initiative provides local youth with access to top-tier players and professional training facilities, effectively integrating Cyprus into the global chess circuit.
