Cyprus commemorates the 30th anniversary of the killings of Tassos Isaac and Solomos Solomou

On August 8, 2026, commemorations in Cyprus reached their peak as the nation marked 30 years since the killings of Tassos Isaac and Solomos Solomou. The memorial events featured motorcycle rallies from all government-controlled cities, converging on Paralimni under the slogan 'Guided by memory, with freedom as our compass.' A central ceremony was held at the Isaac-Solomou monument on Nikou Psara Street, attended by President Nikos Christodoulides, with the event broadcast live on RIK2.

The Isaac-Solomou Memory Initiative organized the gatherings in cooperation with the Paralimni-Deryneia Municipality. Participants used the anniversary to reiterate calls for justice, specifically demanding the execution of outstanding arrest warrants for those involved in the 1996 murders. The events highlight the broader struggle for the return to occupied territories, with protestors symbolically identifying Kyrenia as their ultimate destination.

Following the main event, participants were scheduled to spend the night at the Deryneia roadblock before attending the 30th annual memorial service on Sunday, August 9, at the Church of Agios Dimitrios in Paralimni. Tassos Isaac was killed on August 11, 1996, during buffer zone protests when he was beaten by counter-protesters, followed by the death of Solomos Solomou three days later during similar confrontations.
