Political tensions escalate over semi-governmental organization appointments

A significant political confrontation has emerged in Cyprus following recent government appointments to the boards of semi-governmental organizations. The dispute centers on the role of the Advisory Council, which was established in June 2023 to ensure meritocracy. Out of 95 total appointments, 21 individuals were selected outside of the council’s recommendations. Government officials, including Deputy Spokesman Giannis Antoniou, defended the process as an improvement over past practices, noting that 74 recommendations were adopted and that the council serves only an advisory capacity.

The opposition party DISY has harshly criticized the government, questioning whether the process serves as a mere facade for political appointments. DISY contends that the government violated its own commitment to provide a full justification for any deviation from the council's list. Furthermore, President Nikos Christodoulides fueled the controversy by referring to DISY and AKEL as 'DISAKEL' in response to their criticism, a label that both parties rejected as a distraction. As the dispute continues, the issue is expected to be brought before the parliamentary Committee on Institutions for further scrutiny and oversight.
