British serial killer convicted after police failings

On August 7, 2026, 40-year-old Simon Levy was convicted in London for the murders of 53-year-old Carmensa Valencia-Trujillo in March 2025 and 39-year-old Cheryl Wilkins in August 2025. He was also found guilty of sexually assaulting a third woman in January 2025. The investigation revealed critical failings by law enforcement; authorities had detained Levy in April 2025 as a suspect in the Valencia-Trujillo murder but subsequently released him, allowing him to remain free for five months.

During this period of freedom, Levy sexually assaulted five additional women on London trains before killing Wilkins. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Kevin Southworth of the Metropolitan Police publicly acknowledged that the death of Wilkins could have been prevented and issued an apology to her family. The Metropolitan Police has initiated a self-referral to investigative oversight bodies to address the administrative errors that enabled these further attacks. There is growing concern in the United Kingdom that the total number of victims may be higher than currently confirmed.
