Tufan Erhürman maintains alignment with Ankara on core Cyprus issues

Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman continues to follow the established political course of his predecessors, maintaining a strict alignment with Ankara regarding core issues of the Cyprus negotiation process. While he claims flexibility in determining the methodology of talks, his stance remains immovable on the "hard issues" of energy, security, and sovereignty, which directly concern Turkish national interests.

Erhürman recently stated that he successfully influenced the United Nations' approach by prioritizing confidence-building measures before convening a 5+1 meeting. He expressed vindication for this strategy, noting that critics who doubted his "methodology first" approach nine and a half months ago are now seeing his proposal reflected in the UN Secretary-General's official statements. However, analysts observe that while Erhürman seeks credit for procedural shifts, his policy on the substantive core of the Cyprus problem remains strictly subordinate to the directives and interests of the Turkish government.
