Cyprus police launch investigation into Makarios Drousiotis' book

Cyprus police have initiated a criminal investigation into journalist and author Makarios Drousiotis regarding alleged personal data breaches in his book, "Mafia State." The complaint was filed four years after the book's publication and follows a separate legal challenge involving the author regarding his reporting on the "Santi" case. Police Headquarters Communications officer Michalis Michael confirmed that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is handling the case, which is currently in its preliminary stages.

Mr. Drousiotis stated via social media that authorities have requested testimony from his associates, including the book's printer, editor, and designer, calling the move an attempt to intimidate those involved in his work. He characterized the investigation as part of a wider effort to silence investigative journalism in Cyprus. Police have confirmed that some statements have already been taken, but have provided no further details, citing the need to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation. They also clarified that this case is independent of investigations stemming from findings by the Independent Authority Against Corruption.
