New criminal investigation launched against author Makarios Drousiotis regarding personal data

Cypriot police have initiated a new criminal investigation into journalist and author Makarios Drousiotis concerning an alleged breach of personal data within his book, "Mafia State." The complaint, which was filed by an individual rather than initiated by the police, targets content published four years ago. Reports indicate the complainant is a government official who claims the book disclosed their identity and the nature of their sensitive professional work, resulting in their transfer to a different department.

The investigation is being conducted by the Police Headquarters Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Drousiotis has reported that police have requested statements from individuals involved in the production of the book, including the printer, editor, and designer. The author has decried these actions as an attempt at intimidation and a criminalization of investigative journalism. This case is separate from the ongoing legal proceedings involving an Independent Authority Against Corruption inquiry, as well as a separate referral to the Assize Court regarding charges of spreading false news in the "Santi" case.

The police have confirmed that the probe is currently in its early stages. Authorities stated they are conducting the investigation with respect to legal procedures and the presumption of innocence. Drousiotis has publicly requested financial support to manage the costs of his ongoing legal battles.
