New criminal investigation launched against journalist Makarios Drousiotis
Cypriot authorities have initiated a new criminal investigation into journalist and author Makarios Drousiotis regarding alleged personal data breaches linked to his book "Mafia State." The complaint, which police confirmed was filed by a specific individual rather than initiated by the force itself, comes four years after the book's initial publication. Drousiotis has publicly criticized the move as an attempt to intimidate his associates, noting that investigators have sought statements from his printer, editor, and designer. Police have stated the investigation is currently at an early stage and is separate from ongoing proceedings related to the Independent Authority Against Corruption.
This development follows Drousiotis's separate referral to the Assize Court on charges of publishing false news in a case known as the "Santi" affair. Claiming that these legal challenges are an attempt to exhaust his resources and silence his investigative work, Drousiotis launched an online fundraising campaign. As of August 11, 2026, the campaign successfully reached its target of €50,000 in 36 hours, with the author committing to full financial transparency. The investigation remains ongoing with police authorities emphasizing their commitment to legal processes and the presumption of innocence for all involved parties.
