Turkish Cypriots cross into Kokkina for annual commemoration

Approximately 1,250 Turkish Cypriots crossed through the Limnitis checkpoint into the Kokkina enclave on the morning of August 8, 2026. The transit, which involved 50 mini buses and was facilitated by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), took place between 08:30 and 09:00 to allow participants to attend annual commemorations marking the 1964 aerial bombings of the Tylliria region by the Turkish Air Force.

The events, commemorating the military conflict that occurred between August 7 and 9, 1964, included a ceremony scheduled for 10:00. Reports indicate that the Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhurman, was expected to arrive at the site via military helicopter. Two media vehicles also accompanied the bus convoy through the checkpoint.

The 1964 bombings, which involved the use of napalm, resulted in both military and civilian casualties and remain a somber point of remembrance for the region. Local officials, such as Kato Pyrgos mukhtar Nikos Cleanthous, noted that the legacy of the conflict continues to impact the area, which faces ongoing challenges regarding geographical isolation and restricted road access between Tylliria and major urban centers like Nicosia and Paphos.
