EDEK leadership candidates approved for upcoming party elections
Morfakis Solomonidis, the acting president of the EDEK party, has officially ratified all four candidacies for the upcoming party presidency elections. The decision was announced on August 8, 2026, following a referral by the Congress Credentials Committee to the Political Bureau regarding compliance with Article 38 of the party statute.
Controversy had previously surrounded the candidacy of 27-year-old Sofia Christodoulou Makri, the head of the party's youth wing. Some party members challenged her eligibility, claiming she did not meet the mandatory requirement of five years of continuous party membership. Despite these objections, Solomonidis took full political responsibility for approving all four candidates, stating that his goal is to prevent the party from falling victim to internal tension and to ensure a smooth transition toward the elections scheduled for September 5, 2026.
Solomonidis has called for a cessation of public accusations and inflammatory rhetoric among party members. He emphasized that the party must prioritize unity and constructive dialogue as it prepares for the September vote, asserting that democratic processes must prevail to resolve the current internal impasse.
