Authorities in Paphos intensify crackdown on electric scooters following accidents

Paphos authorities and the local traffic police have launched intensified operations to curb the misuse of electric scooters and personal mobility devices on pedestrian walkways and public spaces. The crackdown follows a recent incident in the tourist area of Kato Paphos, where two individuals lost control of their scooters and fell onto rocks near the sea, narrowly avoiding serious injury. Bystanders and lifeguards assisted in their recovery, and the individuals reportedly sustained only minor wounds and scratches.

Acting Mayor Angelos Onisiforou stated that pedestrian safety is a non-negotiable priority and that law enforcement, including officers such as Andronikos Tsappis and Christos Liasidis, will continue rigorous checks. This local effort aligns with a nationwide police campaign held from August 7 to 9, which resulted in 526 reports of violations, including 219 for illegal driving areas, 116 for lack of helmets, and 86 for failure to use reflective gear. During this broader operation, 28 devices were confiscated to ensure public order. Authorities emphasize that these measures aim to protect all citizens and visitors, ensuring that public walkways remain safe for everyone.
