Electric scooter accident in Paphos prompts crackdown

Two individuals suffered minor injuries after losing control of their electric scooters in the Kato Paphos tourist area on August 7, 2026. The riders veered off a pedestrian path and landed on rocks by the sea, narrowly avoiding bystanders during the incident. Local tourists nearby assisted the injured individuals until they were pulled back to safety. This incident highlights the growing concerns regarding the unregulated use of personal mobility devices in crowded public spaces.

In response to the accident, acting Mayor of Paphos, Angelos Onisiforou, declared that citizen and visitor safety is non-negotiable. The municipality is continuing joint enforcement operations with the Paphos Traffic Department, led by Sub-inspector Andronikos Tsappis and Road Safety Sergeant Christos Liasidis. Authorities have pledged to continue these inspections without exception to ensure that pedestrians, including families and the elderly, can move safely through public areas.
