Police intensify enforcement against mobility devices and traffic violations in Cyprus

Cypriot authorities have intensified enforcement campaigns regarding Personal Mobility Devices (PMDs) following a series of safety incidents. In Paphos, two individuals on electric scooters lost control and fell onto rocks into the sea on August 7, requiring rescue by bystanders and lifeguards. In response, Acting Mayor Angelos Onisiforou emphasized that the safety of pedestrians in public spaces remains an absolute priority, and the municipality continues to cooperate with local traffic police to strictly enforce regulations.

Nationwide, the Cyprus Police conducted two specific campaigns targeting PMD use between July 31 and August 9. These operations resulted in a total of 1,042 reported violations and the seizure of 28 devices. Common infractions included illegal use in pedestrian areas, failure to wear helmets, and lack of mandatory lighting or reflective gear. Simultaneously, the police participated in a pan-European ROADPOL campaign from August 3 to August 9, which focused on speed enforcement. This effort led to the recording of 1,457 speeding violations across the island, along with additional reports for drunk driving and failure to use seat belts. Police officials maintain that these intensive traffic checks will continue daily to enhance road safety and prevent collisions.
