Drone crash and explosion near Bulgarian natural gas pipeline

A decoy drone identified as a 'Maya' type, widely used by the Ukrainian military, entered Bulgarian airspace from Romania and exploded on Saturday, August 8, 2026. The incident occurred at approximately 08:10 local time (05:10 GMT) near the village of Kardam, landing in a field about 200 meters from a Romanian compression station and one kilometer from a Bulgarian station on the Trans-Balkan natural gas pipeline. No casualties or structural damages were reported.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev announced that the country will relocate surveillance and counter-drone capabilities from the Turkish border to the Romanian border in response to the event. The Bulgarian Ministry of Defense stated that initial analysis suggests the incident was not intentional.

Bulgarian Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova has summoned the Ukrainian ambassador, Olesya Ilashchuk, for a meeting on Monday to clarify the circumstances. Kyiv has officially denied that it intentionally targeted Bulgaria, characterizing the event as an unintended accident, and has pledged to cooperate fully with the investigation to determine the facts of the breach.
