Unidentified drone crashes near Bulgarian-Romanian border

On Saturday, August 8, 2026, an unidentified drone entered Bulgarian airspace from Romania and crashed near the village of Kardam, causing an explosion. Prime Minister Rumen Radev reported that the incident occurred at approximately 05:10 GMT (08:10 local time), approximately 100 meters inside Bulgarian territory. The drone exploded near a section of the Trans-Balkan natural gas pipeline, specifically landing about 200 meters from a Romanian compression station and 1 kilometer from a Bulgarian station. No casualties or structural damage were reported following the blast.

The Bulgarian Ministry of Defense stated that preliminary analysis suggests the aircraft was a "Maya" decoy drone, a type frequently utilized by Ukrainian armed forces. Authorities emphasized that there is currently no evidence indicating the intrusion was an intentional attack. The area has been secured by local authorities while investigations continue.

Following the incident, the Bulgarian government held an emergency meeting to address the security breach. Prime Minister Radev announced plans to redeploy drone detection and countermeasure capabilities from the Turkish border to the northern border with Romania.
