Cypriot negotiator outlines steps for resuming peace talks

Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou stated on August 9, 2026, that the next essential step in the Cyprus issue is the convening of an expanded meeting to decide on the resumption of formal negotiations. Speaking to the newspaper 'O Phileleftheros tis Kyriakis', Menelaou emphasized that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' efforts remain firmly within the federal framework. He stressed the importance of preserving the 'acquis' of previous negotiations and reaffirmed that any future process must focus on reaching a comprehensive settlement.

Menelaou identified the repetitive patterns of the Turkish side as a significant negative factor hindering progress. Regarding the upcoming August 26 meeting between Cypriot President Christodoulides and Erhurman, the negotiator stressed that displaying political will is critical for achieving tangible results. The current diplomatic focus rests on securing the necessary environment to restart talks, building upon the positive footprint left by the UN Secretary-General’s recent visit to the island.
