Diplomatic efforts continue for Cyprus settlement following UN Secretary-General visit

Following the recent visit of UN Secretary-General António Guterres to Cyprus, diplomatic efforts are intensifying to restart negotiations aimed at a comprehensive federal solution. Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou emphasized the importance of safeguarding existing convergences from previous talks to avoid restarting from zero. Meanwhile, President Nikos Christodoulides is scheduled to meet with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman on August 26, 2026, to discuss confidence-building measures, particularly the potential opening of new crossing points.

The UN is currently compiling a formal record of past convergences, which will be distributed to both sides and the guarantor powers in the coming weeks. This preparatory work is a prerequisite for convening an expanded meeting, often referred to as a 5+1 format, to decide on the resumption of formal peace talks. While Nicosia stresses the need for Turkey to align with the UN framework, Tufan Erhürman has stated that any solution requires the consent of Turkey and other guarantor powers.

Disagreements persist regarding the role of external actors, with the government in Nicosia insisting that Turkey must return to the negotiation table, while some Turkish Cypriot officials continue to challenge the current status of the Republic of Cyprus. Negotiators are expected to meet prior to the August 26 summit to refine the agenda and set the stage for future progress.
