Cyprus issues yellow weather warning for extreme heat

The Cyprus Meteorological Department has issued a yellow weather warning for extreme heat across inland areas for Wednesday, August 12, 2026. The warning is in effect from 1:00 PM until 3:30 PM, with temperatures expected to peak at 40°C in the interior regions. Coastal areas are forecast to remain cooler, with temperatures reaching 31°C on the west coast and approximately 34°C along other coastal parts, while higher mountainous regions will see peaks of around 30°C.

The region is currently influenced by seasonal low pressure, keeping weather conditions generally clear with occasional cloud cover and a chance of isolated afternoon rain in the mountains. Winds are expected to start light at 3 Beaufort, later becoming south-westerly to north-westerly at force 3 to 4, with gusts up to 5 Beaufort on the southern coast. Authorities advise residents to avoid prolonged sun exposure during peak heat hours. Looking ahead, the meteorological situation is expected to change starting Friday, August 14, as an unstable air mass approaches the island, increasing the likelihood of showers and isolated thunderstorms.
