Cyprus government official discusses efforts for national reunification

Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis addressed the national memorial service for the five heroes of the Letymbou community on Sunday, August 9, 2026. Representing the President of the Republic, Letymbiotis emphasized the administration's commitment to achieving a free and reunified Cyprus, free from occupation forces and outdated guarantees.

Letymbiotis highlighted that the government views the resumption of negotiations as its primary national objective. He noted that recent diplomatic efforts have led to tangible results, including the appointment of a personal envoy by the UN Secretary-General and meetings in Geneva and New York. Regarding the process, the spokesperson stressed the importance of Turkey returning to the negotiating table and aligning with the UN framework.

Responding to recent comments by UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin, Letymbiotis asserted that the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has clearly defined the essential role of guarantor powers in the peace process. He stated that moving forward requires genuine political will from all parties involved. The government intends to continue its efforts to maintain international focus on the core issues of the Cyprus problem while preparing for a potential expanded conference proposed by the UN.
