Cyprus tax department clears nearly two million backlogged tax returns

The Cyprus Tax Department has announced significant progress in its ongoing campaign to address a long-standing backlog of tax returns, clearing approximately 373,000 cases in 2025 alone. This latest effort brings the total number of returns processed since the initiative began in mid-2017 to nearly two million, covering both individual and corporate taxpayers.

The department utilized large-scale automated assessments to handle tax years ranging from 2008 to 2023. Specifically, for the 2025 reporting period, officials processed approximately 262,000 individual assessments for the tax years 2008-2010, 2013, and 2023. These actions resulted in €5.1 million in collectible income tax and €20.7 million in issued refunds, excluding interest. Furthermore, around 35,900 company tax records were addressed as part of this administrative overhaul.

This project was launched in 2017 to rectify historical delays, conduct necessary corrections, and settle outstanding liabilities for legal entities and individuals. The department continues to focus on finalizing pending tax obligations to improve fiscal efficiency. The systematic clearance of these historical records remains a key priority for the Cypriot tax authorities as they continue to modernize assessment processes.
