Cyprus commemorates the 2005 Helios Airways flight tragedy

On Sunday, August 9, 2026, a memorial service was held at the Saint George Metropolitan Church in Paralimni for the 121 victims of the Helios Airways flight disaster. The tragedy occurred on August 14, 2005, when a routine passenger flight turned into one of the darkest events in modern Cypriot history.

Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Evanthia Tsolaki, attended the service and laid a wreath on behalf of President Nikos Christodoulides. In her address, Tsolaki emphasized that safety in the aviation sector is an absolute and non-negotiable obligation. The ceremony, led by the Metropolitan of Constantia and Famagusta, Vassilios, focused on the enduring pain of the families of the victims who originated from the Paralimni region.

The annual memorial marks the lasting impact of the crash, with authorities reaffirming the importance of aviation safety standards. The Minister noted that for the families affected, the passage of two decades has not diminished the weight of the loss, represented by the empty chairs left behind by the deceased.
